The 40th annual hoof and hook competition has been very well supported with 87 entries, a quality field of 54 yearling steers and heifers, and 33 heavy prime beef steers, entries being accepted in pens of three. Again our competition hosted the best line-up of 100% grass finished cattle in Australia.
Prizes this year total over $9000 in value, with thanks to our many sponsors for their continuing generosity that makes the competition possible. We also appreciate the extensive support of Greenham Tasmania, and the time taken by Peter and his staff to make this competition a success.
The other valued sponsors are Impact Fertilisers, Elanco Animal Health, Gallagher Australia, Chemvet, Zoetis, Incitec-Pivot, Datamars, Coopers Animal Health, Red Angus Australia and the Frankcombe family, Rabobank, Nutrien Ag Solutions, and Virbac Australia. Also, local sponsors Perry’s Quality Meats, Smithton Vet Service, Medwin Enterprises, Jaeger Electrical and the Wells family, Leon and Diana Gee, Anthony’s at Highfield, Roxene Kingston and Western Plains Beef.
The hoof judge this year was Dayna Grey, the third generation of the Grey clan to judge our hoof competition. Her grandfather and father have both given their time for our Show over many years, and Dayna’s choices were well received by the knowledgeable crowd.
Winners from the huge field of great cattle in the Yearling Class were local stalwarts Milton and Gaylene De Jonge. Second place was Brett McGlone and third was Bayswater Red Angus from Somerset.
The Prime Beef Steer class and the Fergus Medwin Memorial Trophy was won by Troy Porteus, with young entrant Bridie Payne second and another Troy Porteus entry third.
The Champion Show Group was also won by Troy Porteus, which gained the experienced Porteus family the prestigious Cyril Wells Memorial Trophy.
Those watching on were able to participate in the judging, and this year an old hand and former judge Scott Frankcombe, and Jordan Hingston scored the chocolates sponsored by Roxene Kingston in Class 2, with Daniel Randall and Jane Bruce picking the winners in Class 3.
Results of the judging of the carcase section were announced at the Smithton Community Centre Smithton, on January 11, 2024, combined with the Greenham Beef Updates, and with the data compiled and results determined by Matthew Scott from R&D and Integrity Systems at MLA.
Winner in the Yearling class was the Woodiwiss family from Sunnyside, which came with the Rex Frankcombe Memorial Trophy. Second was Bayswater Red Angus with the entry selected as third place on Show Day, and third was Brett McGlone, selected as second on Show Day, an example of great live judging by Dayna Grey!
This continued in the Prime Beef Steer class, with Bridie Payne gaining first place, from Waterfall Farm (placed fifth in the live judging), and Bayswater Red Angus third.
Livestock Manager Darryl Pearce was impressed with the majority of the carcases this year, highlighting the high scores for marbling and market suitability, and he congratulated the winners.
The committee look forward to a prosperous and productive season for Tasmanian beef producers and hope to have another impressive line-up of cattle at the 2024 Circular Head Show later this year.
Competition Details
The competition is run in the Beef Australia format, with entries received in pens of three cattle in two classes. Exhibitors have the opportunity to co-enter the Beef Australia 2024 National Carcase Competition by completing an entry form. Details of the grass-finished class specifications and entry forms are at https://beefaustralia.com.au/
The committee encourages all entrants to consider entering Beef Australia, as local producers have performed very well in previous years, receiving valuable prizes
The hoof section will be run at the Circular Head Show on Saturday 2ndof December 2023, after which entries will be transported to Greenham Tasmania, to be grazed and fed ad lib silage for 30 days to comply with MSA rules, and processed in early January 2024.
Competition entries will be judged under MSA criteria, which measures saleable meat yield, market specifications, and importantly, eating quality. Care will be taken to ensure MSA compliance.
Bonus carcase points may be awarded for the consistency of weight, fat distribution, lean meat yield and eating quality score of the three cattle in each entry.
All entries are required by law to have National Livestock Identification Scheme (NLIS) tags, and be accompanied by a National Vendor Declaration (NVD) form, a MSA Declaration form and a completed Greenham Tasmania ‘Never Ever’ declaration form, if applicable.
Ear tags for identification will be supplied and will be mailed to entrants during the week prior to the Show Day. Cattle with horns exceeding 5 cm will not be accepted.
A limit of one pen per class per exhibitor may be enforced at the discretion of the stewards.

Biography Dayna Grey:
Raised on the North West Coast of Tasmania on a beef cattle property, Dayna has had a diverse involvement in the Agricultural Industry. Her passion for Agriculture was fuelled through her participation as a Junior Cattle Handler at Sheffield School, where she then continued her studies at Marcus Oldham in Geelong, obtaining a Bachelor of Agribusiness.
Dayna’s career has been varied and wide spread across the Agricultural Industry. After 4 years at Thomas Foods International (TFI) in a supply chain and marketing role, she now resides with her partner on their family farm in Marrabel, South Australia, where she now runs a Livestock Pregnancy Scanning business. Earlier this year, Dayna won the National Young Judges competition at the Sydney Royal Easter Show.
What does it mean to judge at Shows
It is always an honor to be ask to judge at any show, but to be ask by breeders to appraise their cattle is a definite privilege..
I always enjoy talking to breeders throughout the country and see what they are doing with their breeding programs but also the markets that they see will be the bench mark for their operations. I also believe one of the most important things is spending time with the new Generation of Primary Industry young people, to teach yes, but to also listen.
